The difference between a student...and a MASTER (Art class update!)
Updates on weeks 2-3 of Foundation Sketching with Sorie Kim. I feel like I've definitely learned a lot in this class so far, both about art and about learning and the industry in general. Part of me feelings like she goes way too easy on the critiques, but alas. She's the teacher and not me haha. If you're interested in seeing my notes for the class, let me know :3 I wonder if anyone actually reads my descriptions lol. Hope you enjoyed the video :)

Exploring "Fun" Art: Why is it SO HARD to Make?
Просмотров 5 тыс.2 года назад
Fun art, personal art, personal projects, whatever you want to call it, making it hasn't exactly been a "fun" process for me over the years. I found myself in an interesting situation where I had a bit of free time AND a class in the pipeline so I knew I'd be safe messing around for a bit and that I wasn't just going to fall off the learning wagon and never get back on again and so...I started ...

As someone who literally just finished Lesson Zero Introduction on Drawabox I feel like you really missed out on the absolutely crucial 50% lesson which he stresses is as important as doing the exercises. He actually says very specifically NOT to exhaustively push through the exercises and skip the other 50% which is drawing things you really want to draw but fear to draw because they may turn out to be ugly. Had you gone more slowly through the course and balanced the two 50/50 I think you may have gone through the process of overcoming your fear of making ugly drawings and have not burned out.

Hey, that's awesome that you love art! I took a couple of graphics design classes and figured out I needed to do something else to make money, so I took automotive instead and switched my major. I learned a lot about fixing cars and it was a great experience. It's good to be versatile, and I decided I wanted to become a tattoo artist, so now I want to do that while drawing, and I want to get back into oil painting. I still work for companies to financially fuel my interests in hopes of going all in with what I want to do for the rest of my life. 🧘🏼‍♂️

Its always great to see such an enthusiasm to learn to get better at drawing. I loved the way you try to explain what you're going through your courses and it actually reminded me of some stuff I've been neglecting for awhile now. As you advance further its easier to not keep up with these more tedious studies/practices. Keep at it.

Tell me a sexist if you want but I see why more girls have difficulies getting through with drawabox. Based on my teaching experiences I found more girls thrive on studying decorative aspect of art but guys thrives more on explorative stuff. That's why you see more female artists paint flowers but more of their counterparts love to construct weird creatures and devices. Former mainly need good observational skill but training drawabox try to offer is mainly for latters.

Is it okay to draw with a pencil, because at first time when i draw with a pen/fineliner something it feels bad but it's good in second try. Drawabox says don't use pencil, so i am stuck in between but i wanna draw with a pencil 😖😖😫

Thank you for talking about this. I've started Drawabox for the second time a few days ago. I resonate with a lot you talked about. I'm in a bit of a blank now. Do i enjoy art? Or do i maybe just, almost like, envy artists for being able to create and express themselves so beautifully? Need to think about it. Learn how to not go about it in my perfectionist manner. Because my goal feels too far off to reach sometimes.

I'm quite sceptical about this "draw a box" course. Yes I'm sure it can help someone to build muscle memory and spatial skills to draw in one particular way. But the course is really just creating thousands of mechanical copies of people with the exact same rigid modes of drawing, which robs them of their individuality.. I've had several friends who used to make really unique and interesting/creative illustrations, but now their sketches just look very lifeless, rigid or AI-generated. For certain artists who are learning to draw for a particular occupation/setting I'm sure the exercises are useful. But I would be cautious in recommending this to everyone, and then seeing the soul sucked out of their work.

I have been there too. Personally, I found a solution into doing both abstract studies (lines etc) and studies of what I want to draw well. It's a bit like playing a sport. At a side you do workouts in order to prepare the body for the purpose and on the other hand you learn how to practice that sport you chose, with all its related tricks. Translated to art, I usually start studying by doing some lines curved etc to loose the arm and hand... then I study what I want :)

Honestly, it's super, SUPER expensive. 1500 USD? No thanks. Wanikani lifetime costs 199 on sale and they teach you way more in therms of kanji and vocabulary, and way easier, And WAY MORE EFFECTIVE. Honestly, I prefer Tofugu's free guide to study japanese, and from there find good resources, many of them free or way cheaper. 189USD per year is a lot, too. Unless they charge less, it's a big NO.

Is that program worth it though? I really like the natural audio and dialogs. but...... reading a full grammar lesson in between and bits and bobs from the authors life seem to be a waste of time (reading dry grammer sucks). The main problem is the pace. I started the free trial (7 days) The GUI is legit. If I hadn't learned higana and katakana from duolingo I would be screwed. You can do the first 5 lessons in 20-30 minutes a day. (probably less) and then the program pats you on the back says great you now know hiragana here's some complex sentence containing super difficult kanji, hiragana and katakana mixed in cause hey you now mastered it in the past half hour. It does technically teach kanji but wani kani does it way better where you do hundreds per small session but you actually type them which makes sure you practice hiragana and know the exact spelling. and they start with the radicals so your brain can dissect those kanji into smaller bite sized chunks to assemble a meaning. even duolingo seems bettter.because word tend to stick more more. no matter how well you know them they come up (even as incorrect options. All that being said the dialogs ARE superior to anything I've come across more useful more natural and none of this "this student is 5 years old" sentences like DL I have money and I would buy both but I will have time for only one. or max 2. The second being wani kani cause you can really blast through that.

it depends on your learning type... many good artists outthere never touched something like drawbox or any similar. Its not needed at the end, but can helf certaint learning type persons. I have ADS and its nearly impossible for me, i get extreme bored. I gain mutch more skill if i draw what i like and love ... and yes... i improve too. Maybe not so fast but it do the job. Yes and english isnt my native language, thats makes things even harder.
